1 in 5 Children Are Cyberbullied

Children and young people are becoming increasingly immersed in a digitally connected world.

Social media among school aged children, is one of the main places where cyberbullying happens, justifiably it is a top safety concern for parents.

A recent study by the Cyberbullying Research Center found that one in five children between the ages of 10 to 14 has been cyberbullied, cyberbullied others, or has witnessed cyberbullying. All young people involved in cyberbullying, whether as victims or bullies, are likely to experience negative social, emotional, academic, and mental health issues, with the effects lingering throughout adulthood.

Unlike traditional face-to-face bullying, cyberbullying can occur anywhere and anytime and can take shape in different ways, including harassment, trolling, masquerading, outing, cyberstalking and flaming. With 70% of parents reporting that their kids spend at least four hours a day in front of screens since the pandemic started (Morning Consult Survey, 2020), it is now more important than ever to find ways to protect them when interacting with people online.
